Walcott, Daniel, Bovell III for First Citizens award

Joel Bailey :: Newsday :: 20.02.2015

KESHORN WALCOTT, Roger Daniel and George Bovell III are among three former winners who are vying for the 2014 First Citizens Sports Foundation Sportsman of the Year awards.

And the pair of Cleopatra Borel and Rheann Chung, ex-winners of the Sportswoman of the Year awards, are also in the reckoning for the 2014 crown.

The 2014 award ceremony will take place at Queen’s Hall, St Ann’s on March 6.

Walcott was named as the Sportsman of the Year in 2012, after he became Trinidad and Tobago’s second Olympic gold medallist after winning the men’s javelin at the London Games.

Daniel claimed back-to-back Sportsman of the Year titles in 2010 and 2011 while Bovell III took the 2004 equivalent, after he got bronze in the men’s 200-metre individual medley at the Athens Olympics.

Borel has captured the Sportswoman of the Year prize on three occasions — 2002, 2007 and 2010, while Chung took home the prize in 2001.

A total of 51 persons were nominated by their respective sporting organisations — 30 male and 21 female.

Among the notable names are boxer Michael Alexander; West Indies cricket captain Denesh Ramdin, footballers Kevin Molino and Arin King; hockey player Alanna Lewis; jockey Brian Boodramsingh, netballer Joelisa Cooper; sailor Andrew Lewis; squash player Colin Ramasra, Chung’s stepfather and veteran table-tennis ace Dexter St Louis; and tennis players Yohansey Williams and Olivia Bennett.

Also at the ceremony will be the announcement of two major awards — Jeffrey Stollmeyer Award (for the best sporting administration) and the Lystra Lewis Award (for the team of the year).

At the 2013 edition, hurdler Jehue Gordon and powerlifter Giselle Ann Jackman took the respective Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards, while the Trinidad and Tobago Cycling Federation got the Jeffrey Stollmeyer Award and the women’s 4x400-metre relay team (at the CAC Games) collected the Lystra Lewis Award.
